In excess of two dozen Olympic champions, mentors and further global sports figures have put their names to a statement calling for a stop to the capital punishment of a boxing titleholder and coach, who is sentenced to die in Iran.

Escalating International Outrage

Amid increasing global condemnation over the nation's escalating use of executions as a tool of oppression, the forcefully phrased appeal denounces the government's verdict to maintain the execution order of the boxing champion.

Vafaei Sani, thirty, from Mashhad in the northeastern region, was arrested for participating in national uprisings in the year 2019 and accused of aiding an dissident organization. He has passed half a decade in detention, where he has been tortured and confined in isolation.

“Competition is meant to inspire faith, togetherness, and bravery,” the signatories wrote. “The capital punishment of a winner for his opinions is a blatant attack on these ideals and a caution to any competitor who attempts to voice opinions.

Pattern of Executing Competitors

The appeal pointed out that the athlete's case was part of a pattern and emphasized the nation's history of sentencing to death sports champions for their views, including a national team leader, captain of the national football team, and a women's sports leader, captain of the national women’s volleyball team. In 2020, Navid Afkari, a young Iranian competitor, was also executed.

Other supporters to the letter comprise a yachting pioneer, who led the first all-female crew in a round-the-world competition and was the initial female to receive a prestigious sailing award; the previous captain of the national squad an athlete; and a sports figure, who was in the national team for the international competition.

Detention and Unjust Proceedings

The boxer was detained in early 2020. The charges against him comprised “spreading corruption on Earth through incendiarism and destruction of public property”. His ruling has been reversed multiple times but on October 4 it was maintained on the latest review. His legal proceedings was condemned as “grossly unfair” by advocates and groups.

Urging to United Nations

The urging to stop the boxer's execution comes after a 2023 letter to the United Nations official for rights, endorsed by over 100 rights specialists and organizations, urging action to prevent the sports figure's death.

Capital Punishment Escalation

Based on reports, there is an “death penalty surge in the country, which has achieved shocking levels”. In two thousand twenty-three, officials executed at least eight hundred fifty-three people – a forty-eight percent increase on the previous year. The year before, data showed nearly a thousand capital punishments, marking the maximum count since the year 2015. Over eight hundred people have been executed so far in 2025.

Dissidents and protesters are victims, notably in the aftermath of the the year 2022 demonstrations. Analysts say the government have used the executions to suppress dissent, create apprehension among the public and strengthen their hold on authority.
